Mashhad
Iran's holiest city and its second largest, built around the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, which draws millions of pilgrims a year. Nearby are Ferdowsi's tomb at Tus and the green mountain villages of Torqabeh and Shandiz. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons; winters are cold.
